I often make small painted “studies” before starting larger paintings. It is not uncommon for me to paint several smaller versions in an attempt to work out different compositions and/or color palettes. These studies are in no way a lesser version of the larger work. There is often a spontaneity and intimacy that comes out in these studies that does not translate to larger works, and the smaller size makes them easy to fit into almost any space.
